Also known as Gaps or Blue Moon, Montana is a patience game of four rows and four holes. Every move opens a new gap somewhere else, so the puzzle is choosing which hole to create.
How to play Montana Solitaire
- All cards are dealt into four rows and the Aces are removed, leaving gaps in the layout.
- Fill a gap with the card one rank higher, and in the same suit, as the card directly to its left.
- A gap at the start of a row takes a 2. A gap to the right of a King is dead, so nothing can move into it.
- When no moves are left, use the shuffle to redeal the cards that are not yet in order. Line up all four suits to win.
Get the 2s into the first column early. Every card that sits in its final place is one you never have to deal with again after a shuffle.
About the game
Montana is one of the few solitaire games where you can see every card from the start. That makes it closer to a sliding puzzle than a game of luck, and good players win far more often than beginners.
Controls are mouse or touch. Click or tap the cards and the buttons inside the game. Sound, hints and menus are handled by the game itself; if the table stays blank, press Restart or open it in a new tab.
